Vessagiri or Issarasamanarama is a forest monastery situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, and has a great historical value. The ancient cave temple is known to build by King Dewanampiyathissa in the 3rd century B.C. However, King Kashyapa had expanded the monastery providing better facilities for the Buddhist monks who lived in the place. It is believed that there have been 500 monks in Vessa Giriya at the time. Today you can only see the 23 caves with drip ledges, a remaining of a Dagabo, image house, and monk's dining room. The place offers you a calm environment with fewer tourists.
