Mirissa Stilt Fishing is one of the most popular and historic seashore sights of Sri Lanka. The stilt fishing method is very rare, where the fishermen position themselves cleverly on wooden poles planted in shallow water near the shore. They cast their lines from stilts to catch small fish such as mackerel and spotted herrings. Stilt fishing has been practiced by generations of fishermen and presents an excellent example of the island's prosperous seashore culture and fishermen's ingenuity. Visitors are able to witness this enchanting practice, especially during the early morning or afternoon, when the outline of the fishermen against the glinting sky is just a wondrous and unforgettable spectacle.
