Built by king Nishshankamalla, Rakoth Vehera is another sacred stupa located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The stupa has built following the stupa tradition in Anuradhapura era with bricks. Built similar to the Ruwanweli Seya in Anuradhapura, the artwork that believed to have painted around the stupa make this construction stands out among the other stupas in Sri Lanka. It is believed that Rankoth Vehera was called the Ruwanweliseya in ancient times. However, at present, it is called Rankoth Vehera which roughly translates to English as “The stupa with a golden pinnacle”. This is one of the top attractions among locals and tourists alike who visit Polonnaruwa.
