Located in Matale, where the famous Aluvihare also locates, Nalanda Gedige is a temple built with stone. With a history that runs back to the 8th century the temple features architectural elements of Indian culture. Some studies have revealed that this is a temple designed with inspirations from Mahayana Buddhism. Being very different from a typical Buddhist temple, Nalanda Gedige looks more similar to a Hindu Monastery. However, this structure has survived until to this day and showcases the marvelous stone working skills of ancient Sri Lankans.
